At Age 14, I noticed my Yorkie-Poo, Cricket, was really starting to slow down. She had been my shadow all of those years and it made me sad to see her gain weight and sleep the days away.
That's Cricket in the photo, and though it may be hard to believe, she was actually jet black (hence the name) when I got her from one of those pet stores in the mall that don't exist anymore. I was in my early 20's and lived life on the road. You see, I was a barrel racer in the rodeo circuit and traveled the country with my horse, my trailer and my Cricket.
She has slept with me every night of her life. She has been my one constant in this world through relationships, travel and the birth of my kids, Cricket has been there for it all.
But dogs don't live forever...
I didn't want to notice but the changes were obvious. What seemed like a long, slow and gradual decline had suddenly hit me all at once.
Cricket was tired now. All the time. She slept virtually all day every day and would only stir to eat, drink and go outside to potty.
Though she still slept with me every night she kept to herself. She wanted nothing to do with our other dogs and had gained a fair amount of weight due to her inactivity.
Crickets age was undeniable. In addition to the above she was also mostly blind and deaf. For lack of better teminology she had become an old lady.
But she was MY old lady.
If I wanted Cricket to enjoy her final years the way she deserved something had to change...
So I did what anyone would do, I got on the internet. Research commenced and it was EXTREMELY overwhelming at first. I looked at countless products and read THOUSANDS of reviews.
